Before we decide what keywords we want to rank for, we have to see what keywords are getting the most traffic. We have to step outside of our bias views towards our own products and figure out what OTHER people are searching. For example;
A Canadian music store has recently added a new series of web pages for their electronic drum kit line. The owner decides to use the model of the drum kit for his keyword selection which is the TD-9kx. Let’s use Google’s keyword tool to find out how much traffic that keyword receives;

We can see that the monthly and global search results for TD9-KX is very limited. Let’s try something else… like electronic drum kit

There is a hefty increase in traffic for electronic drums so this might be a keyword worth investing in oppose to the model name.
You’ll also notice the “competition” tab which shows the intensity of competition for keywords. The higher the competition, the more difficult it will be to earn rank on the organic listings for Google.
Keep in mind that there are a myriad of keyword research tools that go into much more depth and provide more insight into competition. Consequently, these programs require fees and monthly subscriptions. These include
Word Stream
Trellian
WordTracker
etc
But what if I want to rank for those words?
SEO will help with improve your rank on these popular search terms but if the competition is very fierce, you can always aim to rank locally. Ranking locally means achieving high positioning if someone from your target geographic area is searching for your product or service. For example, if my company is situated in Guelph, Ontario and I sell electronic drum kits, I want to use the keywords “electronic drum kit” and “Guelph, Ontario” in keyword sensitive areas. I would also want to make sure I am listed in Guelph directories and register my business on Google maps.

Keep in mind that discovering and implementing high traffic keywords is done on a page by page basis. If you are an e-commerce store that sells diverse products, individual keyword research and implementation would be done for every product. Even if you specialize in 1 product or service, there are numerous ways to express a single term. An example would be sun protection; we could use the words “upf protection”, “UVA protection”, “UVB Protection”, etc.
But Chris…isn’t this giving away SEO secrets?
These are the barebones techniques for quick on page optimization. Search engine optimization encompasses other techniques such as developing back links, making sure all pages are being indexed, improving navigability, social media, redirects, etc.
